Pittsburgh, PA – The Ohio State Club Football team continued its winning ways on October 19, 2019, moving to 4-0 with a 41-0 victory over the University of Pittsburgh.
The teams agreed to play a modified scrimmage with 12 minute quarters and a running clock, which stopped only on scoring plays and timeouts after Pittsburgh failed to supply referees. Coaches from both sides officiated the game. The game would have normally been ruled a forfeit, but the NCFA and Pittsburgh agreed to allow the game to be official.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead following four touchdown passes from quarterback Kellyn Gerenstein, who added a fifth touchdown on the ground – a 25-yard scamper – around left end. Gerenstein finished 6-of-10 passing for 143 yards against the Panthers, connecting on touchdown passes of 59, 40, 14 and two yards.
Graduate senior Geoff Green was on the receiving end of two of Gerenstein’s touchdown passes, and finished the day with five receptions for 134 yards and three scores, the final touchdown of the day coming on a 19-yard pass from backup quarterback Spencer Moore in the fourth quarter.
Junior wide receiver De’Shawn White also caught a touchdown pass from Gerenstein, hauling in a 14-yard pass in the back corner of the end zone. He also took a punt back 50 yards for a score in the second half, but it was negated on a block-in-the-back penalty.
Senior tight end Justin Cook accounted for Gerenstein’s final touchdown pass of the day, a 2-yard catch just before the half, his second touchdown of the season.
Defensively, Ohio State posted its first shutout of the season, keeping the Panthers out of the end zone and the red zone the entirety of the game. The Buckeyes posted multiple fourth-down stops and forced a second-half turnover as linebacker Nick Untch forced a fumble which was recovered by defensive back Nick Commings.
This season, Ohio State has outscored its opponents 124-14 and has scored at least 41 points in each contest. The Buckeyes are set to return to action October 27 against division and in-state foe Wright State. Kick is set for Noon at Lincoln Tower Field.
