After capturing a national championship for the second straight season, Head Coach James Grega, Jr. announced a handful of staff changes as the 2022 preseason gets into full-swing.
Coach Devin Stover is set to take over for Dylan Barron as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator after Barron’s departure for a coaching position with Oberlin College. Coach Stover recently spent time as the defensive coordinator for the Columbus Fire of the GDFL and served as an assistant coach for Ohio Wesleyan University, coaching linebackers.
“We are extremely grateful to Coach Barron for his years of service to the Ohio State Club Football program,” Grega said. “For seven years, Coach Barron epitomized what being a Buckeye at this level is all about both as a coach and a player. We wish him the best in his next step.”
“That being said, I am very excited to welcome Coach Stover to our coaching staff,” Grega added. “He brings plenty of experience to the table that not only our players, but our entire coaching staff can learn from. I have no doubt that he will only continue the tradition of putting a stellar defense on the field week in and week out.”
Coach Stover will be tasked with coaching Ohio State’s linebackers in addition to calling the defense in 2022.
Ohio State also welcomes Owen Sabo to the coaching staff for 2022 as a student assistant. Coach Sabo will be working primarily with the defensive secondary and comes to Ohio State from St. Edward High School, where he won the 2018 Division I State Championship as a player.
Finally, Grega announced that Coach Matt Thiede has been promoted to Assistant Head Coach in addition to his role as Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. Thiede has been on staff since 2017 and last season coached an offensive line that saw three of its five starters named First Team All-Americans.
“Coach Thiede’s commitment to our program, combined with his passion for coaching made him more than deserving of this promotion,” Grega said. “His improvement each season makes me very excited to see what else he can accomplish in this new role.”
Ohio State is currently accepting applications for a running backs and/or defensive line coach. All interested parties should email James Grega directly at osugrega@gmail.com.
