Bio: Matt Thiede completed his fourth season as a coach with the Ohio State Club Football team in 2021, first joining the staff in 2017. In each of these seasons, he has been coaching both the offensive and defensive line position groups. He also served as interim defensive coordinator in 2018.
In his four seasons, Thiede has coached six All-Americans. Hamzah Masood was named a first-team All-American at left tackle in both 2017 and 2018 and defensive tackle Chase Gasser became Ohio State’s first three-time, First Team All-American in 2019. Left tackle Jordan Griffth-Simmon earned First Team All-America honors in 2019 as a freshman and three out of Thiede’s five starting linemen earned First Team All-America honors in 2021.
Thiede was promoted to Run Game Coordinator following the 2019 season and in 2021 (no games played in 2020 due to COVID-19), Ohio State broke multiple program records including the most rushing yards in a single season with 1,908 (212 yards per game).
Coach Thiede had a long playing career with the club from 2013 to 2016, making several starts on both sides of the ball over the course of four years. He served as a team officer and was selected as a captain over the final three seasons.
He comes from Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia, where he was a part of the team that helped capture the State Championship in 2009. He also served as a graduate assistant during the 2014 preseason.
Coach Thiede holds his B.S. in Education from Ohio State and is currently working towards a Master’s in Education.
