Position: Defensive Backs / Director of Scouting
Bio: Robert “Berto” Smoot completed his first season with Ohio State Club Football in 2025.
In his first year on staff, Ohio State Club Football produced three All-Americans in the secondary, including Tommy Roberts III who was named the NCFA Freshman of the Year. Due to his tireless work off the field, Smoot added the “Director of Scouting” title in the spring of 2026.
Smoot is a 2014 graduate of Beechcroft High School, where he played primarily as a defensive back. He brings over a decade of coaching experience across multiple levels of football. After a stint as a scout team DB at Texas Southern University, Smoot began developing young athletes as a defensive backs coach in Texas, Georgia and Ohio.
He has served as Defensive Coordinator for the Columbus Ginn Elite Bobcats 14U (2019–2022) and Legacy U 14U (2024), and currently leads the defense for Braxton Miller’s Charg1ng 7v7 program. His high school coaching experience includes key roles at Marion-Franklin HS and Columbus South HS, where he contributed as an Assistant Head Coach, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator and QB/Pass Game Coach.
