Ian Gecse earns roster spot with Ohio State Football

One of the stars of Ohio State Club Football’s 2024 National Championship Game win is being called up.

Ian Gecse, whose 34-yard reception in the 2024 NCFA National Championship Game set up the game-winning score in a 20-13 victory, was recently added to Ohio State’s varsity football roster, making him the third former club football player to be called up in the last two seasons. He joins Zach Hayes and Glorien Gough, who earned walk-on spots last season after spending the 2023 season with the club football program. He is the fifth player to be elevated under head coach James Grega, Jr., who also coached De’Shawn White and Chris Booker before they were offered walk-on opportunities in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

“We are so excited for Ian to get this opportunity. From the moment he joined our team, his talent on the football field was undeniable,” Grega said. “While we will miss his athleticism and locker room presence, we are thrilled that he was able to achieve this goal he set for himself. I have no doubt he will continue to thrive and bring toughness and hard work to Ryan Day’s locker room.”

Gecse, a local product out of Grandview Heights, joined the Ohio State Club Football program in fall camp of 2024 as a true sophomore. He played primarily tight end for the Buckeyes, also earning playing time as a defensive linemen. He totaled eight catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns on offense, adding six total tackles and a sack on defense. Gecse also recovered a crucial onside kick in a 17-14 victory over Ohio Wesleyan (JV). He led Ohio State in receiving yards in the national title game victory over Clayton State.

Standing 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Gecse is expected to help out in Ohio State’s tight end and offensive line rooms at the varsity level.
